Water Garden Fish Health
Every pond fish owner must concern themselves with the health of their fish. Pond fish, like all living creatures, require that certain conditions in their environment be met to sustain their health in ponds. Fortunately, if their fish are well cared for, disease is a rare occurrence. On those occasions when a fish becomes ill, there are excellent fish medications available for most pond fish ailments.
Sodium Chloride (pond salt) is a useful remedy for the prevention and treatment of several pond fish ailments. Pond salt helps to heal wounds, encourages a healthy slime coat, reduces the uptake of nitrite, and can be used as a general anti-parasite treatment.
Successful pond owners know that the quantity and quality of pond fish food that they offer their fish have a direct bearing on the health of their pond fish. If given too much food, the efficiency at which the pond fish can digest the food decreases (leading to greater amounts of fish waste). This has significant consequence, as elevated levels of fish waste causes water quality to deteriorate quickly and increases the demand for oxygen.
Maintaining a healthy and stable pond environment is the single most effective method of ensuring that your fish stay in top condition. This is best achieved by filtering the pond, gradually introducing a small number of fish to your pond at any one time, feeding wisely, and most important of all: not over stocking.
