Plumbing

A well-designed water garden pond includes many important components. One key component is the water recirculation system, which requires plumbing. We carry an extensive array of specialty and hard to find plumbing supplies, fittings, and accessories.

The best layout, for both plumbing and general pond design, is the least complicated as possible. When designing your water garden pond, consider the following pond plumbing concerns:

  • Water Intake(s) - Intakes lines should be as large of size as practical.
  • Water Discharge(s) - Discharge lines should be as short as possible and should not be restricted.
  • Filtration - Filtration is essential for ponds to establish and maintain water quality and healthy fish.
  • Pump - Pond pumps are the heart of the pond and should be chosen with care.
  • Drain(s) - A drain line with a pump will greatly facilitate cleaning and partial water changes. This can be done by installing a drainage manifold and pump in a depression (made specifically for the drainage manifold) in the deepest part of the pond.
  • Overflow - Successful pond owners agree that it is important to incorporate an overflow in the design of a water garden pond. There are times when the pond will be purposely or accidentally be overfilled.
  • Refill System - All ponds can benefit by incorporating a refill system. There are a wide range of available refill systems, from floating to electronic devices. Make sure that you have a shut off valve for the refill system so you can stop the flow manually.
  • Pipe/Hose/Tubing - Too frequently pond owners use undersized pipes, hose, and tubing. Successful pond owners never reduce the size of the intake or discharge of a line. The size of the fitting, and consequently the hose or pipe, should not be smaller than the input or output of the pump, as this reduces flow and the pump’s motor life while increasing energy costs. A large pipe causes less friction than a smaller pipe.
